The Waipawa River at State Highway 50 site is a HBRC fresh water quality & ecology monitoring site.   In summer,  when the water warms up and flows decrease, potentially toxic cyanobacteria can grow as dark mats on rocks in parts of this river, and be a health risk for people and animals.
