Hutt Site A
Hutt Estuary Site A is located just below the Waione Street Bridge near the mouth of the estuary. It is monitored annually for sediment quality (metal and nutrient concentrations), muddiness (sediment plate measurements) and algal cover (an indication of excessive nutrients). Every five years, a fine scale survey assesses the community composition of animals living in the sediment.
Sediment conditions at this site have been largely unchanged since annual monitoring began in 2009, except for a slight reduction in nutrient concentrations and a slight increase in copper concentrations within the sediment.
The ecological condition is “moderate-poor” based on the macroinvertebrate community index (an environmental health score based on the types of bugs and insects that live there).

Mud content refers to the amount of fine silt and clay particles (collectively called ‘mud’) that are present in the estuary sandflats.
