Cyclone [insert name here] impacts

Cyclone Gabrielle brought severe gales and heavy rain to many regions in central and upper New Zealand.  Some of the regions waterways are inaccessible for water sampling due to road damage and closures.  The Gisborne region has also experienced significant rainfall since the cyclone, and swim spots in the region have high or very high risk of contamination.  River channels have also changed significantly and woody debris and thick mud may present a hazard.  Advise caution swimming in areas impacted by floodwater.  Floodwater is often contaminated and can make you sick.

A national state of emergency has been declared to support areas impacted by the severe weather event.  Follow Civil Defence advice: www.civildefence.govt.nz
Regular testing of the rivers and beaches are on-going and confirm there are still elevated levels of bacteria across the region's waterways.
