For example, the Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality (ANZECC) provide guidelines on water quality for rivers and coastal waters in New Zealand. Although following a guideline is never mandatory (guidelines are not binding and are not enforced), it is generally regarded as best practice to follow the guidelines.
