The Giant kokopu (Galaxias argenteus) is the largest member of the Galaxiidae family and one of the five whitebait species , although rare in the whitebait catch as they migrate upstream later in the season. “Giants” as they are often called can grow between 200 - 450 mm in length. Adults have large golden spots and other shapes on their bodies. Primarily found along New Zealand’s coast they do not travel far inland, preferring to live in pools and slow flowing lowland runs with overhanging vegetation, undercut banks, logs and debris clusters.
