Banded Kokopu (Galaxias fasciatus) is one of the five whitebait species which can grow to over 200 mm in length. As juveniles (whitebait) they have a golden colour and are very good climbers. They will often escape from buckets by clinging to and wriggling up the sides. Adult banded kokopu have thin, pale, vertical bands along the sides and over the back of the fish. Banded kokopu live in the pools of very small tributaries, often with a complete overhead canopy of vegetation. They can be found in both, native bush streams and urban streams.
