A geological layer of sand, gravel, or fractured rock that contains groundwater. Confined aquifers are underneath impermeable layers of silt or clay (also called aquitards) so they don’t receive water and pollutants from land directly overlying them. In contrary, unconfined aquifers lack aquitards, so pollutants can leach directly into them.
