Greater Wellington Regional Council carries out environmental monitoring at one site in the lower reaches of the Mangaone stream catchment. Recreational water quality monitoring is not carried out.
The Mangaone stream drains a predominantly low lying pastoral catchment with alluvial floodplain geology. The stream is rich in tannins which is consistant with the peaty nature of the surrounding land.
Environmental health and water quality of the Mangaone Stream is generally not very good. This is mainly due to the surrounding land use. The main pressures on water quality are from agricultural run-off from pastoral land.
