The Karori Stream flows south from the suburb of Karori and discharges into the sea at Wellington’s south coast. The stream and its tributaries support a number of native fish species including banded kōkopu, kōaro and longfin eels.
Greater Wellington Regional Council carry out environmental monitoring at one site in the middle reaches of the Karori Stream. Recreational water quality is not monitored.
Landuse in the upper catchment area of the Karori Stream has a significant urban component, but also retains a moderate amount of indigenous forest. The mid and lower catchment areas are dominated by low intensity pastoral farming.
The main pressures affecting water quality in this catchment are stormwater and sewage contamination. In times of heavy rainfall or treatment plant malfunctions, treated sewage from the western suburbs is discharged into the stream.
