The Waipa River arises in the Rangitoto Ranges, and flows into the Waikato River at Ngaruawahia. The water quality site is situated on the upstream side of the Pirongia-Ngutunui Bridge (SH39). The predominant vegetation upstream of the sampling site is pasture, with the dominant land use being dairy and livestock. The river passes through unfenced pasture at the sampling point, with limited riparian cover. The substrate consists primarily of silt. The Waipa River is well known for fishing, more information can be found at www.nzfishing.com.
