The Wharekawa River source is in the Coromandel Ranges and flows into the Wharekawa Harbour on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. The main stem measures 22.4km in length, with about 60km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 57 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep to strongly rolling topography and the river passes through predominantly indigenous and plantation forest, with some pasture in the lower reaches.
The dominant underlying geology is tephra and volcanic. The sampling site is in the lower reaches of the river.
