The Waitetuna River source is in the Pirongia Forest Park and
flows into the Whaingaroa Harbour on the west coast. The main stem measures 18.6km in length, with about 253km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 167 square kilometres. The catchment consists of a mostly steep to moderately steep topography and the river passes through predominantly pasture and indigenous bush, with some areas of plantation forest.
The dominant underlying geology is greywacke, with small areas of tephra and alluvial. The sampling site is located in the lower reaches of the river.
