The Waingaro River source is west of Ngaruawahia and flows into
the northern arm of the Whaingaroa Harbour on the west coast. The mainstem measures 26.6km in length, with about 170km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 123 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep to strongly rolling topography and the river passes through a mixture of pasture, plantation forest and indigenous forest.
The dominant underlying geology is greywacke, with some areas of tephra and mudstone. The sampling site is in the lower reaches of the river. Towns along the Waingaro River include Glen Afton and Pukemiro and the tourist attraction of the Waingaro Hot Springs is in this catchment. The area is popular with whitebaiters.
