The Waikawau River source is largely in native forest catchment in the Herangi range. The river flows west out to the Tasman Sea at Ngarupupu Point between Marakopa and Awakino. The main stem measures 135km in length and the catchment area is approximately 82 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mainly lowland topography and the river passes through predominantly indigenous forest.
The dominant underlying geology is hard sedimentary rock. The sampling site is a very small stream located upstream of a culvert under Mangatoa Road between Marakopa and Waikawau.
