The Waiau River source is in the Coromandel Ranges and flows into the Coromandel Harbour on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula. The mainstem measures 11.5km in length, with about 37.5km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 31 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep to rolling topography and the river passes through predominantly indigenous and plantation forests.
The dominant underlying geology is volcanic, with areas of greywacke. The sampling site is located in the lower reaches of the river.
