The Tapu River flows west from the Coromandel Ranges where it reaches the Firth of Thames at the settlement of Tapu. The main stem measures 10.4km in length, with about 27.4km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 26 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep topography and the river passes through predominantly indigenous forests.
The dominant underlying geology is volcanic. The sampling site is located in the lower reaches of the river.
