The Tairua River source is in the Coromandel Ranges and flows into the Tairua Harbour on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. The main stem measures 44km in length, with about 297km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 224 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep to strongly rolling topography, and the river passes through predominantly indigenous forest, with some pasture and plantation forest in the lower reaches.
The dominant underlying geology is volcanic, with some areas of tephra. Gold mining was undertaken in this catchment in the past. The sampling site is in the lower reaches of the river.
