The Oparau River source is from Mount Pirongia and it flows through
the Pirongia Forest Park into the Kawhia Harbour on the west coast. The
main stem measures 24.5km in length, with about 171km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 120 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep to strongly rolling topography and the river passes through indigenous forest in the upper reaches to predominantly pasture.
The dominant underlying geology is a mixture of tephra, volcanic and greywacke. The sampling site is located in the lower reaches of the river.
