The Ohautira Stream source is west of Ngaruawahia and it flows into
the Whaingaroa Harbour on the west coast. The main stem measures 17.2km in length, with about 59km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 50 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly moderately steep to steep topography and the river passes through predominantly indigenous forest, with some pasture in the upper and lower reaches of the stream.
The dominant underlying geology is greywacke, with small areas of mudstone and tephra. The sampling site is located in the lower reaches of the stream.
