The Kauaeranga River source is in the Coromandel Ranges and flows westward, entering the Firth of Thames near the town of Thames. The mainstem measures 31.2km in length, with about 155km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 129 square kilometres. The catchment consists of mostly steep to moderately steep topography, and the river passes through predominantly indigenous forest.
The dominant underlying geology is volcanic. This catchment has historical Kauri logging and mining in the past. The sampling site is in the lower reaches of the river.
