Manganui River tributary 6km upstream of Kelly Creek confluence

Manganui River 2nd order tributary ecological monitoring site, Awakino. The stream flows through a dense native forest catchment, providing a high amount of shade. The stream bed is composed of gravels and cobbles.

The Manganui River's source is in the Herangi Ranges, and it flows into the Awakino River near the intersection of Manganui Road and State Highway 3. The ecological monitoring sites are situated off Manganui Road, where the river crosses both native forest and farmland. Much of the riverbank is unfenced. The Manganui River is unshaded downstream of the ecological monitoring sites, but ranges from partially to significantly shaded for much of its upper catchment. The river has a hard substrate of mostly gravel and cobble, and woody debris is present in the forested areas. These conditions provide abundant habitats for a range of freshwater invertebrate and fish species present. While not as popular as the Awakino River, the Manganui River is also home to recreational fish such as Brown and Rainbow trout.

What do the attribute band icons mean?

The bands for MCI are as outlined in the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020

A
Macroinvertebrate community indicative of pristine conditions with almost no organic pollution or nutrient enrichment.
B
Macroinvertebrate community indicative of mild organic pollution or nutrient enrichment. Largely composed of taxa sensitive to organic pollution/nutrient enrichment.
C
Macroinvertebrate community indicative of moderate organic pollution or nutrient enrichment. There is a mix of taxa sensitive and insensitive to organic pollution/nutrient enrichment.
National bottom line: MCI score 90
D
Macroinvertebrate community indicative of severe organic pollution or nutrient enrichment. Communities are largely composed of taxa insensitive to inorganic pollution/nutrient enrichment.
