The Awakino River lies in the south-west of the region. The source is in the Herangi Ranges and it flows into the Tasman Sea at Awakino. The river's main stem measures 77.2km in length, with about 502km of tributaries. The catchment area is approximately 383 square kilometres, consisting mostly of steep to strongly rolling topography.
The catchment consists mostly of steep to strongly rolling topography, and the river passes through a mixture of indigenous forest and pasture. The river is well known for whitebaiting and fly fishing.
The dominant underlying geology is a mixture of greywacke, tephra, mudstone and sandstone.
The sampling sites are located in the lower reaches of the river.
