Te Kuiti

Te Kuiti is approximately 78km south of Hamilton. It has one monitoring site, on Queen Street.

Te Kuiti’s one active residential PM10 and PM2.5 monitoring station, at the Waitomo District Council offices on Queen Street, was established in May 2003. PM10 and PM2.5 are measured using a Teledyne API T640x, along with collection of meteorological data.

PM10 exceedances have occurred from time to time and the Te Kuiti airshed is currently classified as polluted under the National Environmental Standards. From 1 September 2016 Te Kuiti must have no more than one PM10 exceedance per 12 month period. The main source of poor air quality during winter is home heating using wood. There are three main industrial sources in Te Kuiti, including a lime processing plant and two woodfired combustion plants associated with two separate sawmilling operations.
