Groundwater Zone: Moutere Deep GroundWater Zone

The Moutere Groundwater Management area underlies the Moutere hill country and extends out under the coastline. It is caracterised by having low water bearing capacity due to the nature of the Geology. Land use is mixed cropping and horticulture.

Water abstraction is mainly from deep bores accessing the Moutere gravels. Limited shallow groundwater is available in some areas. Bore depths range between 100-600m deep and in some areas are free flowing artesian. There is limited deep groundwater which has slow rainfall recharge and the water age is old. For this reason only small allocations are available and limits are set based on the irrigation season covering 180 days per year. Long term pumping causes large drawdown effects which are managed by using water level triggers to restrict abstraction.

Resource Consent information for this zone is current to the 2023/24 season.

Accurately estimating the total amount of water available in a groundwater management zone is not currently possible. Regional Councils are working with the Ministry for the Environment on the best way to calculate this figure. We will include these figures on LAWA when they become available. In the meantime, for more information about a particular groundwater management zone, contact your regional council.
