Surface Water Zone: Tangahoe

The Tangahoe catchment originates behind Eltham and flows through dairy and hill country before entering the sea south of Hawera. The catchment area is 297.6 square kilometres.

There are six water take consents in the Tangahoe catchment, with three of the takes occuring in the Tawhiti stream. There are two for meat and by-product processing and one for dairy processing, with these combined water takes having a large effect on the flow variability in the Tawhiti stream. There are also three water takes from the Tangahoe stream. One of these is for petrochemical processing, and is not currently exercised. There is one for pasture irrigation and one for dairy processing. The dairy processisng consents have the rights to take the largest volumes of water, so have the largest effect on flow variability in the catchment.

The Tangahoe catchment is highly valued for whitebaiting and is identified (through a statutory acknowledgement included in the Regional Fresh Water Plan) as being of particular cultural, spirtual, historical and traditional interest to the Ngati Ruanui Iwi.

Some consents require actual use to be monitored and this is presented as 'Total measured volume Used' where available.

    Due to the large number of streams and rivers in Taranaki, there has not been thorough investigations into all of the streams. The available water is ascertained as and when required for consenting requirements and investigations. However the Regional Freshwater Plan states that a minimum of two-thirds habitat at mean annual low flow is to be retained to protect the life-supporting capacity of the stream/river.

    The Council is currently reviewing the Regional Freshwater Plan and when this is implemented allocation limits will be included.
