Taranaki region

Groundwater Zone: Matemateaonga North

The Matemateaonga Formation comprises alternating Tertiary sandstone, conglomeratic shell and mudstone beds. The formation extends across almost the entire region, with thicknesses of up to 1,000 metres in places.

The formation is exposed throughout large areas of the eastern hill country in central and south Taranaki. The upper Matemateaonga aquifers in North Taranaki are largely unconfined.  Elsewhere in the region, the aquifers are either confined or partially confined.  Flowing artesian conditions exist at a number of localities, particularly in a band of incised hill country bordering the ring plain from Toko south to Ohangai.  The Tertiary sediments that make up the inland hill country in the east of the region also underlie the volcanics deposits of the ringplain.  Extensive aquifers are found within sand and shell bed layers.

There are currently 21 consents to take groundwater from the Matemateaonga Formation aquifers. Water is taken for a range of uses including dairy farming, industrial and municipal water supply purposes. There is limited abstraction pressure on the Matemateaonga Formation aquifers at present. Monitoring by the Council indicates groundwater levels within the Matemateaonga Formation are stable.

Regional councils collect information about how much water is available and manage resource consents for those wishing to take water from groundwater supplies. Use the buttons below to view regional information on: how much water is available, where it comes from and how its used.

    Groundwater in this zone

Accurately estimating the total amount of water available in a groundwater management zone is not currently possible. Regional Councils are working with the Ministry for the Environment on the best way to calculate this figure. We will include these figures on LAWA when they become available. In the meantime, for more information about a particular groundwater management zone, contact your regional council.

Total allocated volume includes consented use only and no allowance has been made for 'permitted' use volumes.
