Lake Rotorangi

Lake Rotorangi was formed in May 1984 by the construction of an earth fill dam on the Pātea River. The lake is the largest hydro-generation artificial storage lake in Taranaki and is also a popular recreational location within the region.

The Pātea Power Scheme harnesses the flow of the Pātea River to produce sufficient power for Egmont Electricity to meet approximately 60% of its consumer needs. The initial Lake Rotorangi programme was designed to keep a watching brief on lake water quality and productivity trends, in order to assess the way in which the new lake was settling down and its overall environmental consequences.

The Council continues to undertake sampling of the lake at two sites on four seasonal occasions. Phytoplankton monitoring is also conducted at the two sites. The most recent lake water quality trend analysis indicates that the lake is eutrophic (nutrient enriched) and that the trophic level continues to increase at a very small annual rate of change.

    Trophic Level Index (TLI) history for this lake

    The TLI score for a lake is calculated from four water quality measurements – chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and water clarity. If water clarity is unavailable, TLI is calculated using the other three water quality measurements. A higher score indicates poorer water quality.
