Surface Water Zone: Upper Mataura Surface Water Zone

The Upper Mataura surface water zone encompasses the headwaters of the Mataura River, located in the Eyre Mountains. The bottom most point of the zone is the Mataura River at Parawa water level recorder site, located at the head of the Nokomai gorge.

Within the confines of the Eyre Mountains, the Mataura River and its tributaries typically drain alpine, snow tussock and forested environments at an altitude of 1600-1800m above sea level. In particularly dry years, the Mataura River can stop flowing on the surface near Fairlight for a distance of a few hundred metres. The Upper Mataura surface water zone is well known as an important brown trout fishery and is revered by both local and international fishermen alike. Farming has long been practiced in the Upper Mataura surface water zone and until recently was a sheep farming strong hold. More recently large scale irrigation for crop production has begun, particularly around Athol. Environment Southland has two permanent water level recorder stations in the Upper Mataura, one at Fairlight for floodwarning purposes and the second recorder at Parawa. Low amounts of surface water are currently allocated from within the Upper Mataura surface water zone.

    The Mataura River is subject to a National Water Conservation Order,  to protect the outstanding fisheries and angling amenity features of the catchment. Because of these features, the provisions of the Order restrict the granting of water permits to take water by requiring that flows not be reduced beyond a specified limit. Therefore the total run-off to sea and available allocation is subject to many variables. Flow for the Upper Mataura is measured at Parawa.
