Surface Water Zone: Coastal Longwoods Surface Water Zone

The Coastal Longwoods surface water zone encompasses the south-western slopes of the Longwoods Range and the coastal area to the east of the Waiau River mouth to west of the Aparima River mouth at Riverton. Approximately half of the zone is covered in dense native forest. The remainder of the zone mainly consists of gently rolling productive farmland cleared of its native cover.

For Southland, the Longwoods Range experiences very high rainfall. An automatic raingauge in the Pourakino Valley (just outside of the Coastal Longwoods WRZ boundary) generally experiences twice the amount of rainfall as other sites in Southland. The Longwoods Range often intercepts the coastal south-westerly weather patterns that predominantly occur in coastal Southland. The Coastal Longwoods area has a long history including once being a thriving gold mining region. A number of small streams flowing from the Longwoods Range were diverted into or intercepted by water races that fed into storage reservoirs. From these reservoirs, the required head of pressure needed to operate high pressured water hoses in the goldfields below could be obtained. The largest catchment within the Coastal Longwoods surface water zone is the Waimeamea River, which originates on the south-west flanks of the Longwoods Range, draining native forest before discharging to the coast near Orepuki. The Ourawera Stream is an important whitebait fishery to locals and still has small scale gold mining activities occurring in its reaches. Environment Southland has no permanent water level stations in the Coastal Longwoods surface water zone. However, flow gaugings are performed periodically to help gain an understanding of low flows of various streams within this zone. At present, the Coastal Longwoods surface water zone has very low levels of surface water allocated from its streams. This is due to factors such as the high rainfall received in the catchments of the area, the relatively low percentage of farmed land and the lack of major industry.

Regional councils collect information about how much water is available and manage resource consents for those wishing to take water from rivers and streams. Use the buttons below to view information on: how much water is available, where it comes from and how its used.

The table above shows the average amount of rainfall the water management zone receives each year and how much of that flows out to sea. These are approximate figures only.

Rainfall is measured at nearby Scotts Gap and Pourakino.

The table above shows the amount of water that is available for use compared to the amount that has been consented. The ‘Total Consented’ and ‘Total Consented and Measured’ fields are based on percentages of the ‘Total available to Consent’ field. If this field is not populated no data will be displayed. Some consents require actual use to be monitored and this is presented as 'Total measured volume Used' where available.

In this region/management zone {{hydroUsage.totalVolume}} m3/year is consented for hydro-electricity and makes up {{hydroUsage.percentageConsented}}% of the total water volume consented for this region/management zone
