Surface Water Zone: Coastal Catlins Surface Water Zone

The Coastal Catlins surface water zone is located in the south-eastern tip of the Southland region. It is a relatively remote, low lying area, with a dominant land cover of native forest. The zone extends east of Mataura Island and the Fortrose Estuary and takes in the catchments of the Titiroa and Waimahaka Streams, the Tokanui and Waikawa Rivers and includes the Longbush Creek catchment to the south east.

The Coastal Catlins surface water zone has several major streams and rivers. The largest of these is the Waikawa River, which flows east then south and into the Waikawa Estuary at Waikawa. Like a number of the larger catchments in the area, the majority of the Waikawa catchment has been cleared of forest cover over the last century. Minimal water resource monitoring has occurred in the past within this zone. This is mainly due to the lack of major rivers and also the small population in the area. The low level of development has in the past reduced the need for hydrological information. A flow recorder station was installed in the Waikawa River at Progress Valley in 2007. Occasional flow gaugings have been undertaken on some of the larger streams in this surface water zone. At present, the Coastal Catlins surface water zone has very low levels of surface water allocated from its streams.
