The Manuherekia catchment (3035 km2) is located north-east of Alexandra, Central Otago, and is the largest sub-catchment of the Clutha/Mata-au catchment.
The climate is characterised by cold winters and warm, dry summers.
The area is dominated by pasture grasslands on the flat and gently sloping land, while tussock grasslands are common in the high country. River flows are highly modified by water use for irrigation.
The river’s headwaters are in the Hawkdun Range, and the catchment is surrounded by mountainous terrain, except to the south-west, where it joins the Clutha River/Mata-Au at Alexandra.
The Manuherekia Rohe includes the following sub-catchments: Dunstan Creek, Lauder Creek, Thomsons Creek, Chatto Creek, Ida Burn, Pool Burn and Manor Burn.
Rainfall in the region is low, with an annual median between 350 and 500 mm in the valley floors and up to 1,000 mm in the surrounding ranges.
