The Dunedin & Coast Freshwater Management Unit (FMU) spans more than 1,000 km2, from just south of Karitāne to the mouth of the Clutha/Mata-Au.
Main catchments are the Waitati River, Leith Stream and Kaikorai Stream catchments within Dunedin city and the Tokomairiro River in the south. Dunedin city is the largest urban area and has the largest population in Otago.
Urban streams have specific water quality issues, including high bacteria and nutrient levels, due to stormwater infrastructure and runoff.
Land use also includes areas of intensive agriculture and cropping and production forestry. Water quality generally deteriorates in the mid to lower catchment areas.
Average rainfall is 738 mm per year.
