Lake Whakatipu at Queenstown Bay

Water quality in Lake Whakatipu is excellent and water quality at Queenstown Bay is generally safe for recreational activities.

Elevated bacteria levels can sometimes occur due to ducks congregating near the shore or after heavy rainfall. Horn Creek enters Queenstown Bay and on rainy days stormwater enters the creek and may carry higher concentrations of bacteria. It is recommended you avoid swimming for 48 hours after rainfall.

Queenstown Bay is the town’s main beach and is a very popular spot in the summer.
