Water in Lake Hāwea is generally safe for recreational activities. However, bacterial contamination can occur after strong winds that can stir up the lake sediment or after heavy rain, as run-off may contain human or animal waste.

Any warnings for the Swimming Embayment do not apply to the rest of Lake Hāwea, unless advised.
