The catchment is dominated by mature native forest. Catchment geology is predominantly weathered greywacke stones mixed with some floodplain alluvial soil, and peat deposits. Riverbed materials mainly comprise of sand and gravel with some bedrocks. The catchment receives elevated rainfall compared to other lowland areas in the region. The monitoring site upstream of the Russell Road represents the natural state in Whananaki Coast.
