The Mangamuka River is 21 km long and begins in the Raetea Forest before flowing south through pastoral land into an upper arm of the Hokianga Harbour. The total catchment area for the Mangamuka River is 147 square km; however the catchment area upstream of the sampling site is only 37 square km.
The sampling site is located upstream of a number of major tributaries including the Opurehu River, and the Mangataipa and Otukere streams. The Mangamuka River provides an excellent habitat for a number of native fish species including kokopu, inanga and bullies. The Mangamuka River has excellent water clarity and low nitrogen levels. However, phosphorus levels are elevated due in part to the geology and morphology of the catchment.
