The Kerikeri River rises in the Puketi Forest inland from Kerikeri and flows into the western extremity of the Bay Of Islands at the Kerikeri inlet. The Kerikeri inlet (or Stone Store Basin) is one of the most important historical sites in Northland. A popular walking track from the inlet leads about fiveĀ km to the Rainbow Falls. One of the first hydroelectric power stations in New Zealand was constructed on the river, and remains of it can be seen from the track.
The catchment contains a range of land uses, including pastoral, horticulture, agricultureĀ and pine forestry.
