Dargaville

Dargaville is a rural town nestled along the Northern Wairoa River in the Kaipara District, is home to around 5,200 residents. Like the most urban areas in New Zealand, the main contributors to particulate matter are domestic heating, outdoor burning, industrial and commercial activities and agricultural emissions.

The Dargaville airshed encompasses the Dargaville township as well as the residential and industrial areas. Council established a permanent monitoring station at the premises of Dargaville Intermediate School at Charlotte Street and started monitoring PM10 and meteorology from August 2024. The site is surrounded by residential areas. PM10 was also monitored in Dargaville at Awakino Road site in 2017, using a mobile monitor. PM10 concentrations in 2017 were similar to council’s other monitoring stations in Whangārei and Marsden Point.

Air quality in this town

Air quality in Dargaville is expected to vary, with spatial differences and noticeable peak in PM10 concentration in winter due to domestic heating emissions from wood burners. PM10 concentrations recorded in the Dargaville airshed complied with the NES air quality during the monitoring in 2017.

The table shows the proportions of the main sources of PM10, PM2.5 and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in this town from home heating, industrial activities, outdoor burning and traffic.  (Indoor, natural and shipping sources are not included in this breakdown).

These values come from 2013 data sourced from MfE’s data service.  Consistent methodology was used to calculate these estimates of PM and NOx emissions, which allows comparison between towns throughout New Zealand.  Regional council or unitary authority published emissions information might differ if they were prepared in a different year or used another method. Contact your regional council or unitary authority for more information about PM and other emissions in your area.
