Surface Water Zone: Stoke Water Management Zone

The Stoke Water Management Zone includes all the Stoke Fan streams that discharge to the Waimea Estuary. The main streams include Saxton Creek, Poorman Valley Strean, Orphanage Stream, Jenkins Creek and Orchard Creek. Water takes from the Stoke aquifer are primarily for industrial use - for bottling, brewing and for cooling manufacturing plants. The main land use in the upper catchment is low density stock farming and development for housing subdivisions. The lowland coastal plain has high density residential housing and industry, where most waterways have been modified to meet flood capacity requirements.

Where necessary, maximum rates have been derived from maximum daily or weekly volumes and vice versa. Similarly, annual water use amounts for some consents have been derived from average rates over all or part of a year. Work is underway to better understand the amount of groundwater available but at this stage that data is unavailable.
