Can I swim here?

Discover New Zealand's best swimming spots this summer with LAWA, featuring water quality information for around 900 beaches, rivers and lakes.

Water quality is regularly tested from November to March in most regions, while predicted water quality results are available year-round for Northland, Auckland and Wellington to help you decide where and when to swim.

Select a site to see its water quality information, nearby facilities, how to get there, and the science behind the data.

Water quality

  • Check the water quality information for the site.
  • Know how to spot toxic algae in rivers or lakes so you can avoid it.
  • Avoid swimming near potential sources of contamination such as flocks of birds, storm water or waste water outlets.

Clean and clear

  • Avoid swimming for at least 2-3 days after heavy or prolonged rain, even for sites that have good water quality.
  • Don't swim if the water is murky or smells unpleasant. It is best to wait until it clears before taking a dip.

EnvironmentalHazards

  • Follow the advice in any warnings and alerts.
  • Check for hazards (e.g. rips or strong river currents, underwater objects, steep drop-offs, or stinging jellyfish at beaches).
  • Know your limits, and never swim alone.  If in doubt, stay out.

LAWA is New Zealand's most comprehensive and up-to-date source for recreational water quality information. This information helps guide decisions on where and when to swim. Keep in mind:

  • Water quality monitoring results reflect conditions at the time of testing and can change, especially after heavy rain or unexpected pollution events.
  • Water quality testing is carried out during the recreational bathing season (around November to March) for most regions. Weekly monitoring results and long-term grades may not indicate swimming suitability outside this season.
  • Predicted results are based on models. While these generally provide accurate water quality predictions, there may be times or conditions where they are less reliable.

We encourage you to use your judgement, and if you are unsure please check with the relevant council or choose another site to swim.

The information in this topic comes from many different agencies and sources. While care is taken ensure the information is accurate and up to date, LAWA cannot guarantee its accuracy, completeness or currency.
