The Te Hoiere/Pelorus River is the largest river in North Marlborough and flows into the head of the Pelorus Sound/Te Hoiere near Havelock. Native forest dominates most of the catchment, particularly the sub-catchments of the Upper Te Hoiere/Pelorus and the Wakamarina. The Te Hoiere/Pelorus catchment is the wettest place in Marlborough with annual rainfall as high as 2650mm. Most Dairy farms in Marlborough are located in the Pelorus catchment particularly in the Rai sub-catchment. The Rai and Te Hoiere/Pelorus are popular swimming and kayaking spots and are frequently used by kayakers at the Outward Bound school based in Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.
