The Kenepuru is one of the larger catchments located in the Marlborough Sounds and in many ways the Kenepuru is not typical of catchments in the Marlborough Sounds. For much of its length it meanders over a wide alluvial flood plain. The river is steeply incised in some places and during the summer months the lower sections can run dry. Nearly 40% of the catchment is in native bush with 20% in pastoral farming and 20% in scrub.
