The Rangitīkei River is 253 km long and its catchment covers an area of 3,948 square km. Streams total 6,214 km. The Rangitīkei catchment has a number of tributaries including the Moawhango (97 km), Hautapu (83 km), Kawhatau (53 km) and Mangawharariki (33 km) Rivers.
The headwaters of the Rangitīkei are situated in the Kaimanawa Ranges, south-east of Lake Taupo. It flows south through the Central Plateau, past Taihape, Mangaweka, Hunterville, Marton and Bulls to the Tasman Sea at Tangimoana, 40 km south-east of Whanganui.
The Rangitīkei flows through rural areas with sheep and beef farming accounting for about half its land use and dairy farming about 20%.
