Surface Water Zone: Southern Coast

The Southern Coastal Zone includes several catchments from just northwest of Cape Kidnappers to south of Blackhead Beach. The largest waterway is the Maraetotara River.

The Maraetotara is a 4th order spring-fed river with its headwaters located on the Maraetotara Plateau 32 km south of where it discharges at Te Awanga within Hawke Bay. The river has a catchment area of 117 km2. The catchment has a soft sedimentary geology, making it prone to hillslope erosion, however a long-term project is restoring riparian plants.

Smaller streams of the Southern Coast Zone include the Waingongoro and Puhokio. Both are 4th order streams and discharge to sea at the coastal settlement of Waimarama on the Pacific coast. Both streams are comparatively small with catchment areas of 25 km2 (Waingongoro) and 40 km2 (Puhokio). These catchments have hard sedimentary geology. Land use within the catchments is predominantly pastoral farming with small coastal urban development in the lower reaches.
