Kaweka Lakes

The Kaweka Lakes are twin lakes in the Kaweka Forest Park managed by the Department of Conservation. The lakes are approx. 670 metres above sea level in the ranges west of Hawke’s Bay (approx 50 km northwest of Napier).   Access is via Kuripapango Road off Taihape Road.  Western Kaweka Lake is monitored for ecological water quality.

Western Kaweka Lake is the only lake monitored.  It is an 8.6 hectare land-slip lake with a maximum depth of 18 meters and classified as a mild, shallow, small lake.

The Kaweka Lakes were formed thousands of years ago by streams being dammed by a large slip from Mt Kuripapango.  The small lakes are ecologically and botanically significant because of the large number of plant species and vegetation types in the surrounding area.

Most of its catchment is dominated by dense vegetation cover of manuka/kanuka (70%), exotic forest (17%), and indigenous forest (9%). It has a short water residence time of 67 days, and this, combined with the relatively unmodified catchment, means there is a low risk from nutrient and sediment losses in its catchment.

    Trophic Level Index (TLI) history for this lake

    The TLI score for a lake is calculated from four water quality measurements – chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and water clarity. If water clarity is unavailable, TLI is calculated using the other three water quality measurements. A higher score indicates poorer water quality.
