Lake Rotonuiahā

Lake Rotonuiahā is a 43.8-hectare monomictic lake that is the largest of the cluster of lakes known as the Putere Lakes. Rotonuiahā has a maximum depth of 29.2 meters and sits at an elevation of 275 m.

Monthly surface water quality monitoring is currently undertaken by Ngāti Pāhauwera in partnership with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.

The Putere Lakes consist of three lakes - Rotonuiahā, Rotoroa and Rotongaio, located northwest of Wairoa, near the Waiau River. The Putere Lakes are of great significance to mana whenua (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Ruapani, and Ngāti Pāhauwera), and there are many sites of significance in the area.

The lakes were likely formed through a combination of earthquakes and landslides. Their catchments are small, steep, and composed of sandstone and mudstone. Rotoroa drains into Rotonuiahā, which then flows into the Waiau River.

Rotonuiahā’s water quality has improved since it was first reported in 1983, but this improvement is at least partly due to the spread of invasive hornwort, which negatively impacts biodiversity, recreation, and mahinga kai gathering.

Ngāti Pāhauwera Development Trust, Hawkes Bay Regional Council, volunteers, and landowners have been working together to improve the health of Rotonuiahā.

    Trophic Level Index (TLI) history for this lake

    The TLI score for a lake is calculated from four water quality measurements – chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and water clarity. If water clarity is unavailable, TLI is calculated using the other three water quality measurements. A higher score indicates poorer water quality.
