The Porporo catchment flows from the Raukumara ranges on the East Cape to its confluence with the Waiapu river near Tikitiki. The lower parts are braided, and shingle is extracted from beaches that are aggrading with river gravels. Land cover is a mix of extensive farmland with areas of indigenous scrub, some exotic forestry, and areas of indigenous bush in the headwaters.
