Hinds River/Hekeao
The Hinds River/Hekeao is located on the Canterbury Plains south of Ashburton, between the Rangitata River and Ashburton River/Hakatere.
The Hinds River/Hekeao is the only hill-fed river in the Hinds Plains catchment. Over the last 150 years, the Hinds Plains area has been heavily modified for agricultural production and the majority of the land area is now dedicated to farming.
The middle reach flows intermittently and is regularly dry, particularly in the summer and autumn, except following heavy and sustained rainfall.
