The Waitao Stream catchment covers approximately 3,732 hectares and enters the Tauranga Harbour at Rangataua Bay. The catchment geology is volcanic with Minden rhyolite and andesitic Otawa volcanics and Papamoa ignimbrite. The upper reaches have predominantly indigenous vegetation cover with some exotic forestry. An active quarry occurs in the catchment.
Water quality monitoring is conducted at Spenser’s farm and several trends are apparent. Nutrients are decreasing while dissolved colour is increasing. Faecal bacteria are elevated and at times in excess of recreational water quality guidelines.
