The Wairoa River catchment is around 2,132 km2 and is dominated by pasture (45%) and indigenous forest (44%). The river is used for electricity generation with a powerhouse located at Ruahihi. The river discharges into the Tauranga Harbour and is known to be a significant contributor to the sediment loads in the harbour.
Water quality is monitored downstream of the Ruahihi Powers Station. Increasing trends are apparent for dissolved colour, indicator bacteria, nitrogen and phosphorus. Median E.coli levels are well within recreational guidelines but these are exceeded on occasion. These trends suggest an increasing contaminant loading from agricultural sources.
